Safety: Please do not forget to wear a life vest. A life vest is critical for your safety as a well as a helmet as you go through the rapids. In addition, please remember the saying, “Nose and Toes”, if you fall out of your kayak or raft keep your nose up and your toes up and toes facing downstream. This will help reduce possible injuries.

How We First Started Kayaking:
We first started coming up to Grants Pass around 2004 or 2005, having never experienced big rivers before. The Rogue River was a real challenge for us, as it was our first time navigating such a powerful body of water. For more than 15 years, we spent our summers in Grants Pass, staying at Morrisons Rogue Wilderness Lodge – Lodging, Fishing, Rafting and Hiking

Our first year, we began our adventure on the Hellgate Jetboat Excursions. By the next summer, we decided to try rafting with the river guides from Morrison’s. One of those guides was Andrew Pratt, whose father was managing the lodge at the time. Over the years, we watched Andrew and his family grow. The last I heard, Andrew had become the President of Morrison’s.

By our third summer, we were kayaking down the Rogue River—and after that, we never went back to the big rafts. It was an incredibly exciting chapter in our lives, made even more special by the wonderful people at Morrison’s. Every summer, for more than 15 years, we returned for two weeks—watching familiar faces grow up and continuing to explore what would eventually become our future home.

In the summer of 2014, we took a kayaking trip guided by Andrew, along with reporters from the Register-Guard. They wrote a beautiful article about their experience, which included some great photos. The article is available for download, and there’s also a short video from the trip—you can even spot my wife Eugenia kayaking in it and in the picture below.

During our stays at Morrison’s, we often kayaked from the lodge down to either Argo or Graves Creek. It was always a thrilling adventure. These days, now that we’re a bit older, we usually put in at Robinson Bridge and kayak down to Indian Mary. It’s the perfect stretch for just the right amount of rapids and fun at our pace.
