Opinion
Long before John West entered county politics, he was building things. He built businesses. He built homes. He worked in timber and forestry. He fought wildfires. He developed property. And, over more than three decades, he built a reputation as someone who believes that problems are meant to be solved not simply discussed.
John West is a lifelong Josephine County resident who has deep roots in the community. His professional background is unusually broad for someone seeking public office. His experience includes entrepreneurship, land development, forestry, wildland firefighting and working directly with county government.
According to his official 2022 voters’ pamphlet statement, John West successfully built and continued operating several multi-million-dollar businesses employing dozens of people. That experience gave him firsthand exposure to payrolls, budgets, regulations, permitting, employees, customers and the realities faced by people who actually have to make a business work.
That background shaped the philosophy he brought to public office. John West has consistently argued that government should operate within its means, just as families and businesses must. His priorities have included controlling spending, reducing unnecessary bureaucracy, supporting local businesses, expanding economic opportunity, improving wildfire protection and addressing the county’s long-standing financial challenges.
Those ideas did not originate in a political campaign. They came from decades of running businesses and working in the real world.
A businessman who understands the cost of government
One of West’s defining characteristics is his emphasis on accountability. A business owner cannot simply spend more money whenever expenses rise. Eventually, the money runs out. Decisions have consequences. Regulations have costs. Delays have costs. And every dollar spent has to come from somewhere.
West has argued that county government should be held to the same basic discipline. During his 2026 campaign, he again emphasized smaller and more efficient government and pointed to his decades of business-management experience as part of the reason he believes he can identify waste and improve the way county government operates.
That perspective is particularly relevant in Josephine County, where the debate over limited revenues and essential services has continued for years.
More than a businessman
It would be a mistake to describe West simply as a developer or entrepreneur. His background also includes more than 30 years of wildland firefighting, along with forestry and ranching experience. His 2022 campaign statement emphasized protecting Josephine County from catastrophic wildfire, improving county forestry revenue and making better use of the county’s natural resources.
Those experiences give John West a perspective on rural Oregon that few elected officials possess.
He understands forests not simply as scenery, but as working landscapes. He understands fire not simply as an environmental issue, but as a threat to homes, families, businesses and entire communities.
And he understands property development not simply as a political debate, but as a process involving landowners, builders, regulations, infrastructure and costs.
A vision centered on Josephine County
Throughout his political career, West has emphasized a simple idea: Josephine County should take greater responsibility for solving its own problems.
His stated priorities have included protecting property rights, improving public safety, supporting local businesses, bringing jobs and industry into the region, reducing bureaucratic obstacles to housing and pursuing greater financial stability for county government.
Whether people ultimately agree with every one of those positions is a matter for voters to decide.
But there is no question that West comes to the discussion with considerable experience outside of politics.
He has spent decades meeting payrolls, managing businesses, working in the woods, fighting fires and dealing with the practical consequences of government decisions.
A second chapter
John West’s first term as commissioner ended with his recall in December 2024, when voters removed him from office in a special election. That episode remains an important part of his public record and of the story of Josephine County politics. But his public career did not end there.
West returned to the political arena in 2026, once again seeking the Position 1 commission seat. In discussing his second campaign, he has continued to emphasize fiscal restraint, government efficiency and the belief that county government should serve the people rather than grow for its own sake. That makes this more than another political campaign.
It is a second chapter in the public life of a Josephine County businessman, firefighter, forester and entrepreneur who believes the county can do better and that many of its biggest challenges can be addressed through local leadership, responsible spending and a willingness to make difficult decisions.
Whatever one’s view of John West’s first term, his larger story is one of work, entrepreneurship, community involvement and a long-standing belief that Josephine County is worth fighting for.
For West, the central question now is not what government can promise. It is what government can responsibly accomplish.
