In a very short time, the current Board of County Commissioners has raised serious red flags regarding our tax dollars:
- Rate Hikes: They already voted to increase SOS rates.
- Deficit Hiring: They want to hire 21 new employees that the Budget Committee says we cannot afford. See BCC agenda below.
- Tax Burdens: They are pushing a tax levy instead of exploring recommended alternatives.
- The Budget Committee Purge: In a move that undermines independent oversight, the BCC terminated all three Budget Committee members. The stated reason was that the members “think too much alike,” which is a transparent euphemism for being fiscally conservative and refusing to rubber-stamp the Board’s proposals. This move undermines the check and balances of our county government. See BCC weekly meeting video below.
By forcing a reapplication process, the BCC is trying to bypass ORS 294.414 and install a “rubber stamp” committee. We need independent oversight, not a hand-picked group that refuses to say “no” to unchecked spending. It’s time to hold the BCC accountable for this lack of transparency. There is only one conclusion you can draw from this – the current BCC is not fiscally conservative.
