Why Oregon Voters Chose Failed Familiar Leadership Over Change

Opinion

I am still trying to understand election night. Drazan’s loss does not necessarily mean Oregon voters were happy with Kotek or the direction of the state. After all, a September DHM Research poll found 58% disapproved of Kotek and 59% disapproved of Oregon’s direction, yet she won reelection. It means enough voters saw keeping an unpopular governor as less risky than electing a Republican. Drazan focused on the failures of Democratic leadership, while Kotek focused on tying Drazan to Trump and making voters worry about what Republican leadership would bring.

The lesson for Republicans is that pointing out problems is not enough. They must show how their solutions will improve everyday life, especially for struggling families. Winning also requires earning the trust of independents and Democrats giving them a reason to cross party lines without feeling they are abandoning their values. The message must be less about party loyalty and more about practical solutions that serve all Oregonians.

When your party is in the minority, as Republicans are in Oregon, winning requires voters to cross party lines.
